Scanning a trainer

Paola, entrenador de delfines

Talking about Delphinus immediately makes us think of swimming with dolphins:  the peace they transmit, the thrill of being in the water with them and when we touch them. However, we almost never stop to think about the enormous responsibility that we bear when we're with them; of feeding them, training them and taking care of them.  This wonderful little animal, besides being considered one of the noblest of marine mammals, requires a lot of attention and care.  That's why we decided to talk with a trainer, in this case Paola Cuevas.

Paola was born in Guadalajara and is studying to be a Vet.  For the past two years, she has come to Cancún every holiday and whenever she has the opportunity to work as a volunteer at Delphinus. She has been working with dolphins for five years now and says she loves these animals.  Her favorite is Chiquilá because she thinks she is very sweet and cute.

The most amazing experience she's had with dolphins is attending a birth:  she defines it as the most beautiful and fascinating experience, an indescribable confusion of feelings that she can't put into words.  She has a lot of stories like this, but another that she really likes is when she went up to a group of people swimming with the dolphins and started to give one of them a mask so they could see the dolphin under water but the mask fell. The dolphin saw this and, without receiving an order, dove for it and gave it back to her.

PaolaThis behavior is not common.  Training does not allow them to do things without an order, but very often when trainers work a lot with a particular dolphin, a bond of affection is formed between the dolphin and the trainer; they understand each other and connect with each other and do the dolphin does things without an order.

The environment of teamwork at Delphinus Riviera Maya is reflected in the unity amongst co-workers.  Paola told us that despite the fact that there are so many of them and they play jokes on each other, they are very united and try to learn from and help each other in all activities, as a team.

What Paola likes about Delphinus is that it offers a personalized touch when working with groups of small children; they give time so that each child can enjoy the dolphins.  Everyone who swims at Delphinus leaves with a good taste in their mouths.

It's also a pleasure for us to talk to an experienced trainer who loves her work with and for the dolphins.
