Right in the middle of the high season our friend and area manager of Apollo, Helena, had a chance to take a break and go on a round trip to the Yucatan peninsula.
She started the vacation in Cancun for a night and the next day they headed to the archeological site of Tulum. "It was raining a lot, like you were under a shower", says Helena.
That same day they headed south to the city of Chetumal where they spent the night. The following morning they visited more pyramids, this time they toured the ruins of Kohunlich and Becan. "They are amazing sites with the beautiful huge masks", she says.
The next day they headed to Uxmal, which is situated in the state of Yucatán, "I loved Uxmal, you can see the site there is in very good condition so you can appreciate it more", says Helena. They had lunch at a traditional restaurant, eating local fare of "cochinita pibil" a dish which is usually cooked underground for five hour. Before the main dish, they enjoyed lime soup another traditional staple in this area.
They went back to the archeological site and stayed for the night show in Uxmal, and ended up the day in the White City, Merida, for a few more nights.
The following day, they headed to a hacienda where they saw how Henequen is treated and how it is made into rope and different items. This is the only hacienda left that does this kind of work, just like in the old days.
In the evening they enjoyed the market in the down town area of Merida, where they shopped for silver, and lots of handicraft as well as watching on as some groups danced and played customary Mexican music.
Helena bought herself a lamp for her house and a silver bracelet. The Apollo guide, Silje, who was guiding the round trip and Helena tried a the famous "marquesinas" in the Plaza. A marquesina is like a pancake, with very light with cheese inside. “Absolutely delicious,” says Helena remembering the Yucatecan snack.
The next day, they took a trip to Ek Balam, on the north side of the Yucatan peninsula. Unfortunately it was very windy, cloudy and cold so our traveler didn’t enjoy it as much as she would have on a sunny day. However, the thousands of flamingoes were a very nice touch, she says.
In the evening Helena enjoyed a dinner with the rest of the tourist in the group and Silje. They dined at Los Rancheros. Helena enjoyed two gringas (a type of taco) and a margarita "I wasn’t very hungry, but it was very good".
They finally left Merida and they stopped on the way home in Chichen Itza. "Unfortunately we got a flat tired on the way, but the driver was very good and it took him 20 minutes to fix it", she says.
The day was great to visit one of the new seven wonders of the world, Chichen Itza. "Silje was a very good guide in all the sites, she could sit ant talk for ours about the Mayans, she was one of the best parts of the trip".
